Naloxone (Narcan)

 

Indications:

 

  • Narcotic Overdose
    • Morphine
    • Heroin
    • Percodan
    • Methadone
    • Demerol
    • Dilaudid
    • Fentanyl
    • Codeine
  • Synthetic Analgesic Overdose:
    • Nubain
    • Talwin
    • Stadol
    • Darvon
    • Darvocet

 

Administration:

  • IV, IO, IM, SC, ET

 

Contraindications:

 

  • Known Hypersensitivity

 

Side Effects:

 

  • Vomiting with rapid administration
  • Ventricular Dysrhythmias
  • Precipitate acute narcotic withdrawal syndrome
  • Seizures
  • Hypertension

 

Adult Dose:

 

  • 1 - 2 mg slow IV/IO/IM titrated to respirations; max 4 mg

 

PEDIATRIC:

 

  • 0.1 mg/kg  max 2 mg; may repeat every 2-3 minutes as needed

 

Therapeutic Effects:

 

  • Reverses most effects of nearly all narcotic and/or synthetic narcotic agents
