Dextrose 50%

(D50W, 50% Dextrose)

 

INDICATIONS:

 

  • Suspected hypoglycemia
  • Altered LOC
  • Coma/Seizure of unknown etiology

 

DOSAGE:

 

ADULT:

 

  • 25 grams slow administration IV/IO given on a case by case basis per Paramedic discretion.

 

PEDIATRIC:

 

  • Diluted (1:1) with NS, for a concentration of D25
  • Dose of 0.5 - 1 grams/kg (2-4 mL/kg) slow IV/IO or rectum administration
  • Given on a case by case basis per Paramedic discretion

 

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

 

  • Intracranial hemorrhage
  • Known CVA

 

SIDE EFFECTS:

 

  • Local irritation
  • May precipitate severe neurological symptoms in alcoholics
